5 Tips to Support Your Liver

The liver serves a vital function in almost every system in your body; from hormone and digestive enzyme production to blood filtration and the last stop in chemical digestion of medications. It makes cholesterol and triglycerides, important components of hormone production. The liver is both an endocrine organ (an organ that produces substances for use in the body, like IGF1) and exocrine organ (produces substances that leave the body, like bile), and along with the heart, brain and pancreas is an organ that we cannot live without. All in all, an organ worth some serious TLC.

 Here are five ways to support your liver:

1. What We Eat: Eat organically grown foods that support liver function, like artichokes, oatmeal, garlic, cabbage, rosemary, turmeric, ginger, beets, orange foods and green foods.

2. How We Eat: Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full. Eat slowly and chew your food until it’s become liquid to aid digestion.

3. How We Move: Consistent, gentle activity like walking, hiking, biking, and yoga improve circulation in and out of the liver. Make sure you have movement in other areas, too – aim for two bowel movements per day.

4. What We Drink: Drink more water. Divide your body weight by 2 to get the number of ounces you need to drink daily. For example, a 150-pound person needs 75 ounces of water. My liver also enjoys Sencha green tea powder .
