Turn Up the Heat on Your Exercise Routine

If anyone had ever told me I’d be practicing yoga on a regular basis, and loving it, several years ago I would have told them it was not enough of a challenge for me. The classes I had experienced were either too slow or too boring and I just couldn’t get still. People (I was among them) would come in and out of class and I would be watching everyone else to see if I was doing the posture correctly. I wasn’t, I’m sure; and I wasn’t breathing either.

That was until Moksha Yoga arrived on the scene in my neighborhood the summer of 2008. I must say I was addicted to the heat from my very first class. Moksha Yoga hot yoga is a series of postures practiced in a heated room (104F). The series works to stretch, strengthen and tone the muscles while detoxifying the body and calming the mind.

I think the heat may be secret weapon behind calming the mind which enhances the benefits of yoga and you must learn to calm the mind and breathe (something I’ve always struggled with during exercise) to withstand such high temperatures. The ‘hot’ in hot yoga also allows for deep, safe stretching and promotes detoxification of the skin, blood and muscles through sweat.

Some of the benefits I have gained from practicing hot yoga are less stress (just ask my family), significantly more energy, stronger immune system (I have literally stopped colds in their tracks) and improved cardiovascular strength; not to mention, when I practice on a consistent basis my physical body is visibly toner, something that was more difficult to achieve when I was at the gym.

The benefits do not end there though. Other health benefits include, but are not limited to, improved digestion, posture, mood, relief from headaches, back/knee pain and even scoliosis. One of my favorite benefits is from Arthritis: The ‘hot’ element of the hot yoga class is what has the most dramatic affect on arthritis sufferers. The effects are so dramatic that the Arthritis and Autoimmunity Research Centre chooses Moksha Yoga hot yoga to be their selected activity for their largest annual fundraising event.

Location is a huge factor for me when going somewhere to exercise consistently, so for those of you in Ohio you are in luck because Moksha is opening their second location at 3527 Columbia Parkway near the Green Dog Café. During the Grand Opening week N...
