8 Health Foods That Aren’t Healthy

8 Health Foods That Aren’t Healthy

I speak with people regarding their diet on a daily basis. One of the lines I’ve grown very accustomed to hearing is “I eat a very healthy diet.” This is then followed by a string of unhealthy selections such as juice, rice cakes, and granola. I want to offer you this list so that you can avoid the “healthy” disease makers.

1. Rice cakes
How did these little cardboard sugar bombs ever get the labeled as health food? The fact that they are not enjoyable to eat probably led people to assume that they must be healthy or why else would they exist? They are nothing but high glycemic sugar loads that rapidly raise sugar and thus insulin.

Here’s a fun fact: the lower your fasting blood sugar remains over your lifetime, the longer you will live. These high sugar bombs will raise that fasting blood sugar and lead to insulin resistance, which is the first step toward diabetes. Ergo, high sugar bombs lead to a shortened life span. I’m not looking to put these manufacturers out of business (not in this economy) so please continue to buy these little gems and simply use them as door jams, hockey pucks, frisbee’s and coasters.

2. Juice
Good ol’ fashion juice right from Mother Nature. Wrong. Many orange juice labels will surprise you with the fact that they have added high fructose corn syrup. Those lovely healthy oranges on the tree are squeezed into large storage vats where they sit for long periods of time and are then shipped to manufacturing plants. To make this old stale concentrate palatable requires multiple chemicals and the addition of high fructose corn syrup. Even the freshest of juice is nothing but flavored sugar water. Fruit is healthy and good for us when it comes in its whole form with fiber and skin. Juice is just the sweet sugary nectar that holds the promise of diabetes.

3. Protein bars
I have a challenge for you. Go to your local grocery or health food store and look at all the protein bars. Find ONE that has less than 5 grams of sugar per serving. Good luck. Look at Clif bars, Luna Bars, MET-Rx, etc, and you will see anywhere from 10 to 26 grams of sugar per bar. There are often a lot of milk and other allergens in these bars as well. If you are exercising aggressively and need these calories then there may be a place for these in your diet but in general I see people eating these as convenience foods.

Artificial Sweeteners Make You Fat

Artificial Sweeteners Make You Fat

Artificial Sweeteners Make You Fat

There is no way to sugar coat it. Who drinks diet soda pop? Big people. What does diet soda pop do? Makes big people bigger. The studies show this to be true. If you’re clinging to diet sodas to help you lose weight then you are on the deck of the Titanic arranging deck chairs. That ship is going down and you’re wasting time with bad ideas.

The cold hard facts are that artificial sweeteners come in two types: really bad ones that cause cancer and sleep disturbance, and the not so bad ones that only cause weight gain.

So what’s the answer? Address the real problem.

Why do you require so much sweet taste in your foods? Let’s go back in time and really think about what is was like to live just 100 years ago. What foods existed back in 1910?

High fructose corn syrup hadn’t been invented yet. Artificial sweeteners didn’t exist. Real sweeteners like actual sugar barely existed and were rarely used.

So what did they eat? Real food. The sweetest thing to cross their palate was some nice fruit with natural sugars. There was no obesity at that time. They moved their bodies and they ate whole foods. Gee, how could they have survived?

Many of us drop our jaw and gasp with absolute disbelief when the idea is shared that perhaps we eat too much sugar and require just a tad too much sweetener in our world.

Let’s ponder this. When did obesity and diabetes and hypertension and heart disease become household words?

Are you aware of what an EKG is? It’s a device that looks at your hearts electrical activity and shows if there are signs of a heart attack. Did you know that the doctor that invented the first EKG machine, Dr Paul Dudley White, was laughed at?

Dr. White invented the EKG machine to detect heart disease back in 1920 at Harvard University and was laughed at by his peers because you had to search three counties high and low to find ONE person with coronary disease back then. Dr. White was told to “engage in more productive pursuits” and stop wasting time in this EKG technology.

Obesity and heart disease hadn’t been invented yet. Perhaps Dr. White was psychic and he foresaw a world full of high fructose corn syrup, processed food, sugary treats and endless sweets.

Aspartame, often sold as NutraSweet, is one of the worst chemicals ever devised and its acceptance by the FDA is riddled with controversy and corruption.

It causes brain cancer and other disease when consumed and yet I see people every day that just can’t get enough. It is the sweetener in Diet Coke.

By the way, my personal pole shows that Diet Coke is blowing Diet Pepsi out of the water in sales. So the race to gain weight is clearly being won by Diet Coke.

Other sweeteners such as the much maligned saccharine, is far less toxic than first believed. Sucrolose is still a concern and being followed closely as it too was quickly passed by the FDA before adequate te...

The Best Cancer-Fighting Foods

The Best Cancer-Fighting Foods

A doctor with a malignant tumor changes his diet to stave off his disease

I was diagnosed with brain cancer about 16 years ago. I received chemotherapy and went into remission, but the cancer came back and I endured two surgeries and 13 months of chemotherapy. I asked my oncologist if I ought to change my diet to avoid another recurrence. His answer was perfectly stereotypical: “Eat what you like. It won’t make much difference.”

He was wrong.

The extensive research published in the last decade alone proves that what you eat can have a profound effect on your protection against cancer. But my doctor’s answer was hardly surprising. It’s a little-known fact that nutrition is barely taught in med schools, where the solution to most problems is a drug. And doctors don’t trust patients to make lifestyle changes. I recall a conversation with a fellow physician at a conference after I spoke on the importance of a healthy diet in fighting disease. “You may be right, David, but people don’t want to change,” he said. “They just want to take a pill and forget about it.” I don’t know whether he’s right, but after all the study I’ve done, I know it isn’t true for me.

I spent months researching the healing powers of food before I fully grasped my own natural cancer-fighting potential. I met with a variety of researchers, scoured medical databases, and combed scientific publications. I traveled all over the world and consulted experts from nearly every continent.

In my quest, I discovered that the list of anticancer foods is actually quite long. Some foods block natural bodily processes such as inflammation that fuels cancer growth. Others force cancer cells to die through a process that specialists call apoptosis. Still other foods assist the body in detoxifying cancer-causing toxins or protecting against free radicals. But most of them attack the disease on a variety of fronts. And they do it every day, three times a day, without provoking any side effects. To avoid the disease, it’s essential to take advantage of this natural protection, and nurture it.

I’ve learned that the anticancer diet is the exact opposite of the typical American meal: mostly colorful vegetables and legumes, plus unsaturated fats (olive, canola, or flaxseed oils), garlic, herbs, and spices. Meat and eggs are optional. Through extensive research, I devised a list of the most promising cancer fighters, along with recommendations on how to make the most of their potential. Include at least one, and preferably two, at every meal, to maximize your protection.

I’ve kept cancer at bay for 8 years now, and I attribute my survival largely to the changes I’ve made in my diet and lifestyle. I exercise and meditate more and eat wholesome anticancer foods on a daily basis. Still, the medical est...
